Abstract:
With the advancement of new media technologies, the topics of the body and technology have regained attention. In order to investigate the characteristics of embodied practices among young women during online fitness follow-along sessions, as well as the interaction between technology and the body in this context, focusing on young female fitness practitioners who follow the Bilibili fitness influencer “周六野Zoey(@wildsaturday. zoey)” as the research subject, this paper employs in-depth interviews to explore, from an embodiment perspective, how technology interacts with bodily experience in the online fitness follow-along sessions and the significance of this interaction. The findings reveal that, on the physical level, digital media extend the dimensions through which individuals perceive their own bodies and the external world, facilitating a dialogue between the material and symbolic body through the interaction of sensory perception and remote connectivity technologies. On the sensory level, online fitness activities technologically reconstruct the perception of time and space through embodied practices, leveraging hybrid spatiotemporal experiences to overcome physical separation and reorganize temporal order. On the cognitive level, female fitness practitioners dynamically adjust their cognition based on embodied experience, and in coordinating the inner and outer body, reconfigure and expand the body's meaning as a medium for experiencing and understanding the world. The study demonstrates that in online fitness practices, young female fitness practitioners engage in cognitive expansion through the interaction between technology and the body, revealing the interplay between individual agency and structural factors, which in turn supports a more holistic understanding of the body and affirms its subjective significance.
