Abstract:

SIMA Qian and OUYANG Xiu have innumerable links in their concepts of inheritance which are extremely famous and immortal. Centering on SIMA Qian¡¯s Shiji and OUYANG Xiu¡¯s New History of the Five Dynasties and other epitaph inscription proses, this paper reviewed their ideology, writing purpose, creation methods and so on. The results show that SIMA Qian and OUYANG xiu inherit the longª²cherished ideal of their fathers, with strong sense of duty of carrying forward the family culture and common psychology of pursuing immortality. Both of them attach great importance to the cultivation of moral character of gentlemen, and advocate the writing purpose of praising the good. They also have the literary talent ability to spread immortality for themselves and others. SIMA Qian narrates historical events and people mainly through his masterpiece Shiji, while OUYANG Xiu writes numerous outstanding epitaph inscriptions of relatives, friends, celebrities, great ministers and people with lofty ideals as well as New History of the Five Dynasties. Both of them practice the immortal concept of inheritance with their creations. Based on the principle of objectivity and faithfulness, SIMA Qian and OUYANG Xiu adopt the creation methods such as selecting big events for recording and highlighting the theme to make the values of their works immortal. SIMA Qian can faithfully state the historical facts; he describes the historical events which are informative and accurate. About rulers, he doesn¡¯t record their imaginary events and conceal their evil events. And OUYANG Xiu¡¯s writing is also on the premise of sticking to the facts.
