Abstract:
In order to reveal the competitive strategies that should be adopted in the international competition of transportation technology standards, this study relies on a diachronic competitive game case of railway gauge standards among countries along the Southeast Asian section of the Trans-Asian Railway(Indochina Peninsula). Using industrial organization theory, the network effects of transportation technology standards and several related attributes and competitive strategies are analyzed. The findings reveal that transportation technology standards, typified by railway gauge standards, exhibit both direct and indirect network effects. In the competitive game of transportation technology standards, there exists a “critical mass” associated with a particular technical standard. Once the number of users of that technical standard version exceeds the “critical mass”, path dependence in the development of the transportation industry emerges, locking it into that specific transportation technology standard. The achievement of the “critical mass” for a particular technical standard version is generally triggered by small historical events. However, in market structures where competition among transportation technology standards is intense, such small historical events are often the result of game strategies. The study indicates that to ensure the success of a transportation technology standard in international competition, it is essential to utilize every opportunity and condition in the diachronic competitive game to create small historical events, thereby ensuring that the number of users of that transportation technology standard reaches the “critical mass”.
