- Abstract:
- This paper studied spirit of freedom and modern enlightenment in Chinese traditional culture from the perspectives of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. The results show that Confucianism proposes using manners to regulate individuals behavior, pursuing “do as one pleases but not go beyond rules”, which is a kind of limited freedom; Taoism emphasizes freedom most, both pursuing spirit of freedom and exploring ultimate life freedom; Buddhism advocates developing the subjectivity of life, stressing that one should not hinder others freedom for his own freedom. Its discovered that the spirit of freedom in Chinese traditional culture has something in common with Western freedom such as obeying moral laws, active and passive freedom, and so on.
